Scope and Contents

Account of the preparation of seals for eating in Uibhist a Tuath/North Uist, including pressing blubber to extract oils. Carmichael recalls tasting the flesh of a young seal on Heisgeir [Heisker/Monach Isles] and that it was 'very agreeable.' and like venison. The accompanying proverb reads 'Bu mhath am biadh feamanaich aran seagail agus saill roin'.

Among the notes it is stated that Raol mac Alein [Raghnall mac Ailein] was the last to inhabit Caisteal Bhuirgh and that he added the porch and extended the west side of it. Archaeological note which reads, 'North of Roglas [Roe Glas, Uibhist a Deas/South Uist] the Rev Alex[ander] Campbell priest Bornish [Bornais] saw a mile of the machair closely cover[ed] over with ciste where the wind blew away the sand.'

Scope and Contents Archaeological note entitled 'Hoilisgeir' [possibly Trolaisgeir/Trollasker, Uibhist a Deas/South Uist], which reads 'Remains of house eye of Kiln + fire place (sorn) + dyke on top of Pabby Harris 50 acres lost.' [Pabbay, Na Hearadh/Isle of Harris]. The note also states that there is lime on ruins at Kildonan [Cill Donnain, Uibhist a Deas/South Uist] and that a Mrs Macgill[ivra]y said she saw it when she was a 'lassie' and that it had 'tangles sticking out'. Archaeological note on a burial site at Dungaineach [Dùn Gaimhnich/Dunganichy, Beinn na Faoghla/Benbecula] stating that it is at the 'bealaich on the machair' and that beside it was a heap of bones and ashes. The graves are surrounded 'by stones on edge with lintels across top of the lintels [causewayed] over with small peb[bles] carefully.' Carmichael adds that there is a similar place at Carnan Dhiarma[i]d in Iocar [Ìochdar, Uibhist a Deas/South Uist]

Archaeological notes on Carnach Mhor Dremsdale and Coilleag Dhonul Ghuirm [Càrnach Mhòr, Dreumasdal/Drimsdale and Coilleag Dhòmhnaill Ghuirm, both Uibhist a Deas/South Uist] including that cists, large bones, skulls, a house support and a stone pillar were found on Càrnach Mhòr under sixty feet of sand, and that Coilleag Dhòmhnaill Ghuirm was open.

The various sites relating to St Donain are described as Eilean Donain or Isle Donain, which is where the saint's house was, the house being '50 x 26 feet with several surrounding ruins' and the island itself being 70 yards long by 50 yards wide. Cladh Donain [Cille Dhonnain] is described as a peninsula separated from Eilean Donain by another island, the relative distances being noted, and containing a ruined chapel...

Scope and Contents Archaeological notes on ruins at Croice near Bornish [Cròic a Deas, Bornais, Uibhist a Deas/South Uist] describing Carmichael's visit there, how he was looking at and for the ruins as well as a description of what he found including that the scattered remains of a building could be found within half a foot at low water on the spring tide, that in digging down a few inches he found remains of a plant and peat moss with sand and gravel and the hard buttresses 'like broken pieces of old ruins...
